Mark Twain House Visit Virtually or Take a Trip
If you are an avid reader or know much a Twain a tour could be of interest, online but to me you miss the true essence of Twain. You Decide.
On to a little history. Although born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, this great American writer was and still is known best by his pen name, Mark Twain. Heralded as being the greatest humorist the United States ever produced, as well as being called the “father of American literature” by the amazing William Faulkner, Twain’s writing is still being taught in schools in 2021. Referred to as the ‘Greatest American Novels’, Twain was responsible for the creation of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” in 1876, and its sequel, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in 1884 – two books that became part of the American culture for all time.
Twain also had a stunning home in the state of Connecticut – a dwelling that many people wish to visit and see with their own eyes. “Quite frankly, just being able to stand in that library of Twain’s is an experience unlike any other”.
Twain’s Home Virtually
However, signing up for the 3-D House Tour is a fantastic way to learn, visit and be thrilled at the magic that lies within Mark Twain’s house—from the comfort and safety of your very own home.
For a little background, it was in August of 1873 when the famous architect, Edward Tuckerman Potter, began to design Mark Twain’s Hartford home. And even though there was more construction to be done on the lavish building, Twain and his family moved in on September 19th‚ 1874. What the house became is simply nothing like anything you’ve witnessed before.
With 25 rooms distributed across three floors, even back in 1874, the home was installed with the latest in modern innovations of that time period. Mark Twain would call his years here, “the happiest and most productive” of his entire life.
Along your virtual tour, you will get a gander at the entrance hall that is beyond impressive for receiving visitors. The hall’s ornamental detail was carved when the house was built. And, in 1881, the interior design firm of the famous Tiffany & Co. was hired to stencil the room in silver, and paint the walls and ceiling red with patterns of black and silver. They drew inspiration from other cultures, such as Asia, to form the design scheme that runs throughout the first floor and public spaces of the house.
A Couple of Amazing Rooms in Twain’s Home Virtually
Another amazing room to lay eyes on is the conservatory. A staple for many upper-class late Victorian homes‚ Mark Twain went one step further, filling his conservatory with a fountain and lush plant life that still thrive today. It was so fragrant and lovely that it was given the nickname “The Jungle” by Twain’s own daughters.
An original room in the Hartford home is ‘The School Room’, originally designed as Twain’s study. This perfectly created classroom was for the daughters who were educated by their mother and a governess as they grew. Housing a Fischer upright piano, the room’s amazing décor was completed in 1879. Those are just three of the grand rooms to witness; and, as stated before, when you set you eyes on Twain’s library along your tour, you will never wish to leave.
While the virtual tour is free at this time for one and all, making a donation to the Mark Twain House & Museum is truly helpful. They are trying their best to hold strong during this pandemic so they will be able to reopen their doors as soon as possible in order for you to explore the stunning house and grounds for yourself. You can even shop online at the Mark Twain Museum and find one-of-a-kind gifts, from Tom Sawyer charm necklaces to Victorian pieces of jewelry to innovative gifts for the most curious child who wishes to one day change the world with their creations…much like Twain did, himself.
Here in Connecticut sits a legend, and this virtual tour is a must in order to visit Mark Twain’s magical home and wait for the day when you can personally walk in the footsteps of an American legend.
