Save your money and go to Red Rock Canyon for the day. As we all know, there is a major reason why people head to the area of Las Vegas, Nevada. However, there is only one sure thing you can bet on when it comes to receiving a memorable, adventurous, cool vacation – and that is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Located just a few miles west of Las Vegas, this huge park encompasses over 195,000 acres within the Mojave Desert, and has become known as an area of worldwide geologic interest and beauty.
Founded in 1988, as the Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, Southern Nevada Conservancy’s many programs and services have combined to carry out their mission: To help visitors gain deeper understanding and appreciation of Red Rock Canyon. And when you explore the fun to be had in Red Rock, the list of things to do is extensive, from scenic drives to camping, hiking, and more.
Scenic Drive or Hike Red Rock Canyon Nevada
Let’s first explore the scenic drive that shouldn’t be missed. This thirteen-mile trek heads straight through Red Rock Canyon allowing visitors to explore the highs and lows from their vehicle or bicycle, with many scenic stops and trailheads along the way.
For those who wish to hike, Red Rock is literally a maze consisting of canyons and peaks, ledges and chimneys, chutes and gullies that all lead to surprises around every wall. With 26 different hikes and trails to choose from, you can go from the deepest canyons to the highest points of the land and they are referenced on the trail map that Red Rock Canyon Park provides. From easy to moderate to difficult, there is something for everyone. As an example, if wishing to take a short trek where perhaps taking pictures is what you’re after, a trail designated as easy averages 0.20 miles and takes around thirty minutes. It will have you wandering through Willow Springs and gazing at some truly natural beauty. A moderate one-hour trail will take you towards a cliff-side that features historical rock art, estimated to be at least 800 years old. This trail begins in the Willow Springs Picnic Area parking lot.
Climbing, Biking, or Take a Step Up to A Great Sunset
Climbing is also a sport that has become extremely popular in Red Rock Canyon. These various routes cater to both beginners and advanced climbers; the latter come from all around the world to experience the immense boulders and sheer rock faces.
Taking the day to jump on a bicycle in Red Rock Canyon is a more than enjoyable way to see the unique flora and fauna up-close and personal. Home to a diverse selection of plants and animals, there is something new around every corner. Bicycles are allowed on the one-way scenic drive, paved spur roads, and designated mountain bike trails.
A great section of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is the one developed campground that opened in 1998. Located just two miles east of the Visitor’s Center, it’s a lovely spot to ‘set up house’ and to enjoy those lovely sunsets as your thrilling days come to a close.
